On September 8, 2025, just one day before Malta’s international friendly against San Marino, Head Coach Emilio De Leo and forward Irvin Cardona addressed the media. They also shared their thoughts on the team’s current trajectory.
De Leo stressed the importance of growth and continuity, stating that the team must learn from every game while building consistency, a reflection of Malta’s evolving football identity. Despite narrowly missing out on victory in their last outing and falling just short of bringing home three points, he emphasized that progress is not measured solely by results but by the lessons learned and the resilience gained through challenges.
Addressing the absence of several key players, including those unavailable even before the match against Lithuania, De Leo acknowledged the team’s misfortunes but praised the players who stepped up to fill the gaps. He highlighted the efforts of Irvin Cardona, Paiber, Beerman, and Grech, noting how they rose to the occasion and gave their best, reinforcing the idea that every squad member has a vital role to play.
Cardona, who made his debut for Malta in the Lithuania match, reflected positively on the experience, saying it was a pleasant introduction and that he has adapted well, hoping it will be the first of many appearances for the national team.
Taking personal accountability, De Leo stated that he bears responsibility for the team’s performance but called on both experienced and younger players to share that responsibility as well. While reflecting on the Lithuania game, he encouraged his squad not to lose hope, stressing that they must not throw in the towel but instead remain focused on improvement and continued growth. Though disappointed with recent results, he reminded everyone that the team is progressing and becoming stronger with each challenge.
Looking ahead to the match against San Marino, De Leo urged his players to approach the game with full concentration, not only tactically but also mentally and emotionally. He warned against underestimating the value of a friendly, reaffirming that every match matters and contributes to the team’s long-term development.
