No clarity on new names for French Prime Minister after government collapses

There is currently no clarity regarding potential successors for the French premiership following the collapse of Prime Minister Francois Bayrou’s government. Bayrou’s administration fell yesterday after losing a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly by 364 votes to 194.

The vote was triggered by his attempt to push through an unpopular package of austerity measures—including €44 billion in spending cuts and the elimination of two public holidays—that ultimately failed to win sufficient support.

Bayrou, who had served less than nine months, submitted his resignation, and President Macron must now appoint a new prime minister amid a deeply fragmented parliament.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been in power since May 2017 and this will be his seventh cabinet and Prime Minister.
