Previous Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu has been appointed Prime Minister after his predecessor, Francois Bayrou lost a vote of confidence. Francois Bayrou failed to pass a budget with up to €44 billion in cuts and the task will now be handed over to the new Prime Minister. However, the far-right opposition has made it clear that is not willing to work with any government appointed by President Emmanuel Macron and called for Presidential elections.
Francois Bayrou was ousted with an overwhelming 63.5% of the vote and there is still no hope that the new Prime Minister is able to strike a deal with the Opposition. Protesters in Paris blocked several streets to denounce Prime Minister Francois Bayrou’s proposed budget cuts, snarling traffic and drawing a heavy police presence. Protestors called for a general strike and described themselves as the “Bloquons Tout” in a similar style to Yellow Vest protesters of 2018.
