Up to 10 drones were downed of the more than a dozen Russian drones that entered Polish airspace earlier this morning. Some of the drones were not en route to Ukraine but were directed into Polish territory with some of the drones going deep into Mniszków, 250 KM deep into Polish territory. Other drones entered Lubin and Elbląg in Warmian-Masurian. NATO jets by Italy, Romania and the Netherlands were scrambled to intercept the drones.
This is the first time in history that Russia is deliberately targeting a NATO member in an air attack. The attack did not cause any casualties and some of the drones were Gerbera drones which are mainly intended to disrupt air-defence systems.
This is not the first time that Russian drones entered Polish territory but previously the drones were said to have been en route to Ukraine and were isolated incidents. Today’s incident was well planned and orchestrated with multiple drones deliberately flying deep into Polish territory.
Poland is holding an emergency meeting with NATO allies over the incident. The British Prime Minister said that he was concerned about the attack. French President Emmanuel Macron said that the attack was unacceptable. Malta’s Deputy-Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg condemned Russia’s violation of Poland’s airspace and said that Poland has the right to take the necessary steps to defend its sovereign territory. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said that the US stands by its NATO allies and will defend every inch of NATO territory.
Russia’s drone attacks on Poland is part of a series of escalatory actions by Russia against Europe. Russian state media mocked the statements made by European leaders.
