Romania is opposing a proposed No-Fly Zone on Ukraine by Poland. The No Fly Zone as proposed by Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is intended to exclusively shoot down Russian objects targeting NATO countries. According to the Romanian President, Nicusor Dan, the proposal would effectively bring Romania at war with Russia.
At the end of the last week, a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace but the Romanian air force escorted the drone back to Ukraine instead of shooting it down. Last week, Poland and NATO allies shot down up to 10 Russian drones in Poland. NATO and the US have refused to acknowledge the attack. NATO jets are now patrolling Polish skies and the Polish military moved its unit closer to the border with Belarus and Russia.
Russian officials including Dmitry Peskov and Dmitry Medvedev reacted to Poland’s proposal with typical belligerent rhetoric stating that a No Fly Zone in Ukraine would be equivalent to a declaration of war against Russia. Below are Medvedev’s comments from his Telegram group.
