The opening day of the Elite Basketball Tournament Malta 2024 delivered thrilling action and showcased a blend of athleticism, teamwork, and history at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion. The schedule featured two men’s matchups and a landmark moment with the first-ever women’s game in the tournament’s history.
USA Select and Hibernians set the tone early with dominant performances in the men’s competition, while ARU made history by securing victory in the women’s debut clash against Starlites.
Men’s Competition – USA Select 108–92 Starlites (HT 50–48)
The tournament tipped off with a high-scoring showdown between USA Select and Starlites. The first half was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging baskets and heading into the break separated by just two points (50–48).
In the second half, USA Select’s relentless pace and deep scoring rotation proved decisive. Their fast transition play overwhelmed Starlites as the Americans pulled away to claim a convincing 108–92 victory.
Despite the loss, Jackson Threadgill (Starlites) stood out with a 30-point performance, earning Player of the Match honors for his offensive brilliance.
Men’s Competition – Hibernians 104–57 ARU (HT 52–26)
Hibernians made a statement of intent with a dominant display against ARU. Their aggressive defense and rapid fast breaks allowed them to build a commanding 52–26 halftime lead.
The second half mirrored the first, with Hibs continuing to control every aspect of the game. They cruised to a 104–57 victory, stamping their authority early in the tournament.
Ivan Demcesan was voted Player of the Match, excelling in both offense and defense, especially under the rim.
Women’s Competition – ARU 67–44 Starlites (HT 39–24)
The women’s tournament made its historic debut with ARU securing the first-ever victory in this category. ARU’s balanced offense and disciplined defense saw them establish a solid 39–24 halftime advantage.
Starlites fought hard to close the gap in the second half, but ARU held firm under the leadership of James Bamfield, sealing a memorable 67–44 win.
Izzabelle Booth delivered a standout performance, showcasing her elite skills and finishing with 30 points, earning Player of the Match recognition.
