European Parliament approves resolution to list drug cartels as terrorist organisations

Yesterday, the European Parliament has approved a resolution demanding Colombian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation over the murder of the presidential candidate and Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay. The motion also proposed to list a number Latin American criminal organisations as terrorist groups including the Colombian cartel Clan del Golfo, the Venezuelan cartel Cartel de los Soles and the remaining FARC dissident groups. Spanish PP MEP Alma Lucía Ezcurra Almansa saiod that these organisations are an international threat.

The motion states that the murder of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay ties with the ongoing and rising criminality by organised criminal groups in the region. It follows the the recent policy of US President Donald Trump to classify Latin American drug cartels as terrorist organisations. The motion will now be discussed by the European Council.

Miguel Uribe Turbay, a Colombian Presidential candidate, died on August 11th from the gunshot wounds he sustained on 7 June. The 15 year-old boy who shot him was arrested but the mandator of the killing is still at large. Elder José Arteaga Hernández who is being accused of organising the killing was also arrested.

The motion passed with 355 votes in favour, 173 against and 15 abstentions.
