Over the weekend, the US deployed a naval force off the coast of Venezuela sparking fears in Venezuela of invasion. US Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro reacted by publishing a propaganda video with his military. Nicolás Maduro is accused in the US Courts of facilitating the export of drugs, namely cocaine, from Venezuela to the US and is also accused of receiving proceeds from these illegal drug export operations.
Combating drug trafficking was a major electoral promise by Donald Trump which he also tied with illegal immigration by blaming immigrants as a major source for US drug imports. Drug trafficking at sea, particularly via small boats, is a significant contributor to drugs exports to the US although the majority of drugs that enter the US border at sea do so via container ships.
