At least one Republican Senator, Rand Paul, has criticised the US government’s action to strike a boat that according to the US government was carrying narcotic to the US. No official statement was released about the operation by the Department of War and all the details about the operation are derived from US President Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social.
President Trump said that the boat was carrying 11 members of the Trend de Aragua criminal organisation which President Trump also designated as a terrorist organisation. President Trump designated several drug cartel organisations as terrorist organisations including the Mexican MS-13 cartel.
Drug cartels in Mexico and in Venezuela have their own armed militias, control territory, towns and villages and also use heavy weapons. Mexican drug cartels have also significant influence and control over politics and the government while Venezuela drug cartels work in direct collusion with the government.
Concerns are also being highlighted on the possibility that the boat that was struck was carrying immigrants and not drug traffickers. The boat was running on four outbound motors making it highly likely it was fast-speed boat owned by traffickers but the identities of those killed was not revealed. These concerns are also aligned with the growing protests against the US government’s disregard for the rule-of-law and its use of the military to address crime in specific cities.
