Trump changes name of “Department of Defense” to “Department of War”: official policy focuses on defence

At the end of last week, US President Donald Trump made an announcement changing the name of the “Department of Defense” to “Department of War”. President Trump said that this change was meant to follow his policy into turning the US military into a lethal and offensive force. According to President Trump the Department of Defense used to be called the Department of War when the US won World War 1 and World War 2 and he doesn’t just want defence, but also wants offense. President Trump also blamed the previous name change on “woke”.

The Department of War was changed to the Department of Defense US President Harry S. Truman to project a more peaceful foreign policy for the US.

Despite the change in name, official US government policy is focus on US foreign military efforts abroad which effectively provides offensive capabilities and deterrence against hostile actors. The US government is cancelling a military training assistance programme to the Baltic states according to press reports, while separate press reports say cite the new US defence policy on China written by Under Secretary of War Policy Elbridge Colby has proposed to shift attention from deterring China in the Pacific to a defence posture. Politicoย previously named Elbridge Colby in the US government’s decision to halt weapons aid to Ukraine.

President Trump has often reiterated that the US wants to reduce its security role in Europe but this is the first time that President Trump is indicating that he wants to reduce the US’ military posture in the Pacific.

President Trump has been non-committal over defending Taiwan against a Chinese invasion, but visiting the Philippines this year War Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the US wanted to increase its military cooperation with the Philippines in order for it to be able to protect its sovereignty. During this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that China’s invasion of Taiwan is imminent and added that that the US wanted to increase its cooperation with its regional allies.
