The Libyan press is reporting that the Government of National Unity has taken over Mitiga Airport and its military base from the Special Deterrence Forces (Al-Radaa Brigade) via a Turkish brokered deal. The deal is part of a process led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeiba to integrate armed militias with the security forces.
The non-government militia was previously resisting the government’s plan while holding to its positions and threatening a new conflict in Tripoli. The Al-Radaa Brigade has now pledged not to get involved in politics and will withdraw to a single headquarters.
The government will also be taking over the prisons of Ayn Zara and Jadidah which were previously under the control of Osama Najim Al-Masri, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, as part of the government’s ongoing process to fully bring prisons under state judicial control.
