Malta’s Police have taken an interest in Alkagesta following the arrest of Adnan Ahmadzada last week. The Police are currently reading online articles and trying to understand the story.
No formal investigation has been opened and it is highly unlikely Malta’s Police will follow through given that the government has gutted the Financial Crimes Investigations Department to prevent any serious criminal investigations and prosecutions against Labour Party politicians. The consequence of this dysfunctional situation in Malta is that complex financial crime can take place without any consequences.
Malta supposedly has a centre of maritime surveillance and intelligence that cooperates with foreign authorities and facilitates data sharing between the authorities.
The Police and Malta’s Sanctions Board will probably sit this story out and await the conclusions of the officials investigations by Brussels and London before taking any action.
Alkagesta is Malta’s largest oil bunkerer and is being investigated by the EU and British authorities over Russian oil trading. The suspected mastermind behind the company,ย Adnan Ahmadzada was arrested last week.
