Yesterday, Malta was one of the up to 156 members that announced its recognition of the State of Palestine. You can view Prime Minister Robert Abela’s speech yesterday at the United Nations, below.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to prevent the formation of a Palestinian state and to ethnically cleanse the remaining Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with increased settlements.
Remarkably, some of the countries in Europe which have refused to support the recognition of the State of Palestine, formed part of the Axis powers in the Second World War and these include Germany, Italy, Hungary and Austria. The Baltics and Finland also supported Germany during the Second World War but their support was exclusively focused on their war against the Soviet Union.
Protests took place yesterday across Italy against the government’s refusal to recognise the State of Palestine with clashes against the police recorded in Milan.
