Women hold protest in Valletta calling for the decriminalisation of abortion

Up to three hundred people, mostly women, attended a protest today in Valletta calling on the government to decriminalise abortion. The groups organising the protest included Moviment Graffitti and Voice for Choice, which advocates for accessible abortion. Marceline Naudi, a member of Doctors for Choice, also spoke at the protest, saying she does not impose her values on others and that, likewise, others should not impose their values on her or on women.

Calls to decriminalise abortion are growing after a woman was charged in court for seeking medical assistance at Maltaโ€™s national hospital, Mater Dei, following a pill-induced abortion at home. The case also comes after the Labour government consolidated abortion laws. An estimated 500 abortions take place every in Malta mostly pill-induced.

The Labour government is now vowing to change the law to prevent women from being taken to Court when seeking medical attention after an abortion.
