Israel strikes Gaza City while talks take place in Cairo

Israel is still striking Gaza City with shelling and aerial bombardment despite ongoing talks in Cairo between Israeli and Hamas representatives. Hamas is also engaged in ongoing fighting against rival Palestinian clans.

Hamas and Israel are hashing out details of a proposed peace plan by President Donald Trump. Hamas has committed itself to hand over all remaining Israeli hostages and the administration of Gaza but it said it won’t disarm. Some of the details include the Palestinian prisoners that will be released by Israel in exchange of the Israeli hostages.

US State Secretary Marco Rubio said in an interview that the deal should be implemented in the coming days. The Secretary of State also said that Israel has no intention of governing Gaza, but wants it handed over to a non-terrorist organisation.

Israelis rallied in large numbers during the weekend to demand an immediate end to the war in Gaza.

Previously to agreeing to President Trump’s peace deal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he will not allow a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River.
