According to the latest data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), sea transport between Malta and Gozo continued to show steady growth during the third quarter of 2025, with both passenger and vehicle traffic recording year-on-year increases.
Between July and September 2025, a total of 12,064 trips were carried out across all sea transport routes, carrying 2,089,047 passengers. August emerged as the busiest month of the quarter, accounting for 4,099 trips, or 34 % of total crossings.
On the Mฤกarr-ฤirkewwa route, the core connection between the two islands, 1,711,511 passengers were recorded during the quarterโan increase of 3.3 % compared to the same period in 2024. The number of vehicles also rose slightly by 2 per cent, totalling 600,695. The busiest month was again August, when 603,080 passengers (35.2 % of the total) crossed the channel.
A total of 9,238 trips were carried out on this route, up marginally by 0.1 per cent from the previous year. Traffic patterns reflected typical travel behaviour, with Sundays and Mondays being the busiest for vehicle departures from Mฤกarr, while Fridays and Saturdays saw the highest outbound traffic from ฤirkewwa. Passenger movements peaked on weekends, with Saturdays and Sundays drawing the largest crowds.
Meanwhile, sea transport between Mฤกarr and Valletta also saw a marked increase in use. The service carried 377,536 passengers during the third quarter of 2025, up by 17.9 % compared to the same period last year. The number of trips rose by 3 %ย to 2,826, with August once again being the peak month, accounting for 981 trips (34.7 %)and 137,394 passengers (36.4 %).
