Yesterday evening, hundreds of people marched in a rally commemorating Daphne Caruana Galizia, eight years after she was murdered. Many Opposition politicians from Malta and journalists worldwide gave their tributes online and the rally of yesterday was well-attended.
Speakers at the rally yesterday included Andrew Drago from (Front Żgħażagħ għall-Ambjent), Giuseppe Giulietti (Articolo 21), Ingram Bondin of the Ramblers Association, Clemence Dujardin from Occupy Justice, Vicki Ann Cremona from Repubblika and even former Dutch politician Pieter Omtzigt. During the morning a separate commemoration was held at the makeshift monument of Daphne Caruana Galizia in front of the Law Courts building in Valletta that was attended by Pia Zammit of Occupy Justice, Matthew Xuereb (IĠM president), Klara Vassallo (PEN Malta), and again Giuseppe Giulietti (Articolo 21).
Daphne Caruana Galizia was praised as a journalist who sought the truth and whose work needs to be continued to address Malta’s deficiencies and the crisis in rule of law. Andrew Drago said that the crisis in rule of law is taking place to the detriment of the environment while Ingram Bondin echoed his organisations current campaign message to protect public spaces. Both hailed civic participation as a means to fight corruption and defend our rights.
Vicki Ann Cremona said Daphne’s murder is a European free-speech issue and stressed the importance of her work. She also echoed the demands of other speakers, including Clemence Dujardin and Pieter Omtzigt, for full justice and the full implementation of the Public Inquiry’s recommendations.
Daphne Caruana Galizia remains Malta’s most celebrated journalist and author despite her murder. Her family is still fighting for full justice with the man that is suspected of commissioning her murder, still needs to go to trial.
