Concerns raised over disruption of major cases as Magistrate Rachel Montebello is promoted to Judge

Concerns are being raised that high-profile Court cases on corruption may get disrupted after Magistrate Rachel Montebello has been promoted to Judge. Magistrate Rachel Montebello was presiding over the high-profile corruption cases of Vitals and Steward Health Care, the Police Superintendent Ray Aquilina that bought a heavily-discounted apartment from Yorgen Fenech, and the case over 17 Black (Yorgen Fenech’s company in Dubai).

Magistrate Rachel Montebello also presided over the compilation of evidence of Yorgen Fenech’s trial in which he is accused of commissioning the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The date for the trial is still pending as Yorgen Fenech fought Prosecutors over legal and technical matters.

The Magistrate had familiarised herself with corruption cases and criminal suspect Yorgen Fenech as many high-profile corruption cases landed in her Court. Her replacement would have to read extensive legal documentation to familiarise themselves with the complexity of these cases.

The other Magistrate that has been appointed Judge is Simone Galea. Two Magistrates have been appointed and these are Francis Agius and Ingrid Bianco.
