Long time animal rights activist Alison Bezzina will not have her contract renewed as Animal Welfare Commissioner. She was first appointed to the role in 2020.
During her role she oversaw the implementation of a new microchipping and licensing system and new laws regulating the breeding and trading of dangerous dogs. She advocated for stronger enforcement and improved animal welfare laws but her advice was not always accepted. She was also against the government’s liberalisation of the trade of wild and exotic animals but favoured regulation to impose conditions on animal-keepers.
She pledged to keep fighting for animal rights and thanked all her friends and colleagues who supported her in her role.
