Lawyer Fleur Abela, daughter of retired Judge Toni Abela, has been appointed as the new Animal Welfare Commissioner, succeeding long-time animal rights advocate Alison Bezzina, whose term is coming to an end.
Fleur Abela graduated in law from the University of Malta in 2018 before continuing her studies at Queen Mary University of London. She practises in civil, human rights, and family law, and has worked on legal projects related to children and animal welfare.
Her appointment follows a notable chapter under Alison Bezzina, who since 2020 has been a strong and at times outspoken voice for animal rights. Bezzina oversaw key reforms, including the introduction of microchipping and licensing systems, and new regulations governing dog breeding and trading. She often challenged the authorities on enforcement issues and openly opposed the liberalisation of the exotic animal trade, calling instead for tougher conditions on animal keeping.
As many have pointed out, Bezzina’s tenure raised the bar for animal welfare advocacy, setting a strong precedent for the one who steps into the role next.
