When last week, Times of Malta asked the Prime Minister about Keith Schembri, he dismissed Schembri’s claimed association as a generic connection he has with many ordinary citizens, but stopped short of condemning him.
Keith Schembri associated himself with the Labour Party and the Prime Minister during an interview with Ricky Caruana. The association was uninvited and the Prime Minister draws a (fake) line between Joseph Muscat and Keith Schembri, tolerating and rehabilitating the former, while ignoring the latter. Although the Prime Minister has rehabilitated Joseph Muscat and allowed his faction to take a significant position and influence in the party, especially by giving the Deputy-Leader post to Alex Agius Saliba, Keith Schembri is not welcome by the Prime to return to Labour’s fold.
Yet, the Prime Minister, has lost even the courage he had before to condemn Keith Schembri and his actions and now he’s justifying him as a suspected criminal who is still not yet found guilty. Presumed innocent and all that gobbledygook. The Prime Minister has rehabilitated Joseph Muscat and his gang at his own expense and influence in the Party. He has lost control of the Party’s narrative as it is now hijacked by Joseph Muscat’s goons and lacking meaningful friends and connections in politics, the Prime Minister feels unable dominate them and take full control of the party and its narrative.
You can pity the Prime Minister, but his lack of control is the result of his own actions. His cowardice is willing and his weakness, complacent and opportunistic. He understands he was short-sighted but is now too afraid to walk back on his decision to rehabilitate Joseph Muscat and his gang in the party. Now, the Prime Minister feels like a room-mate he can’t kick out as he shares his power over the party with his predecessor. Welcome to Hotel California.
Joseph Muscat will only lose his influence over the Labour Party if Labour loses the election. Anyone who truly has Labour’s interests at heart wants Labour to lose the next general election.
