No racetrack for you

Car racing enthusiasts are complaining that the government didn’t provide enough capital expenditure for the construction of a new race-track. They are complaining that the government has provided only up to €400,000 for this project for next year. However, the government did actually provide for up to € 1 million for the project for this year and it is normal that the funding for capital projects is allocated on a year-to-year basis. However, if the € 1 million that were previously allocated were not spent, the funds would not be carried forward in the same project or entity in the next year, but instead would move to the government’s Consolidated Fund.

There is no indication that works have started on the new race-track project which will take up existing agricultural and industrial land, indicating that he funds may not have been disbursed for the project at least. There are ongoing maintenance works on the existing race-track.

As outlined in our analysis of the budget estimates, the government is spending less on projects and cutting on recurrent revenue to focus more on the minimum necessities such as subsidies and health. By contrast to the government’s priorities, the racetrack is capricious expenditure.

Indeed, the racetrack is a privileged granted to a small group of people to enjoy themselves – it has no national value whatsoever. The project will come at the expense of industrial and agricultural land simply to fulfill the privileged fantasies and desires of a small clique of people.

Why don’t they buy a racetrack themselves? Elsewhere? It’s preposterous that the public has to pay for this.

  1. I agree, the public (you and I) should NOT be paying for THEIR hobbies. By such reasoning why not also buy guns, bullets and bird callers from the public purse to satisfy hunters and trappers ?
