Opposition Leader Alex Borg has renounced the €1700 salary increase given to him as Opposition Leader in next year’s budget and said that he was never consulted about this increase. The increase, which will be given to government Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries will also be given yo the Leader of Opposition. Alex Borg also urged the government to withdraw the increase from its budget measures.
The Leader of Opposition said that the government members are abusing from the salary increases given to public sectors workers to reward themselves with a salary increase. Alex Borg also said that he will renounce his increase because government has only raised COLA by €4.66 which is also taxed. Constituted bodies have also remarked that taxing COLA increases defeats its purpose.
The Nationalist Party already opposed the €1700 increase in its initial reaction to the budget. In its reaction, PN applauded the government’s tax reforms but also said that the government failed to address fundamental problems in the country such as traffic and overpopulation.
