Yesterday in Parliament, Opposition Leader Alex Borg gave a scathing condemnation of the government for failing to defend Malta’s interests before the kangaroo court of the ICC in the case related to the fraudulent contract awarded by the Maltese government to Steward Health Care. He then proceeded to present his vision for the country before reacting to next year’s Budget proposals.
Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg said that he wants to see a country united behind its national interests, Maltese youth who stay in Malta and build their future at home, and Maltese entrepreneurs investing in Malta. He criticised the government for having no plan for unbridled economic growth which is also coming at the expense of the quality of life. He also pointed out that the Labour government has increased economic growth by rapidly increasing the working population.
Opposition Leader Alex Borg praised the government’s fiscal measures but highlighted the government’s decreasing capital expenditure as one of his main criticism of Budget 2026. and outlined that the government has no plan or vision to address major national problems. He reiterated that capital projects are necessary to alleviate the traffic problem. He also called for more investment in modern technology and AI as he underlined the need to create quality jobs. He added that the cost of living is increasing exponentionally and the government is ignoring every day realities.
Borg also highlighted that there are still many private industry workers who are being employed via government contracts that are paid less than government workers doing the same job.
On the government’s salary increase to Ministers, the Opposition Leader highlighted that government ministers had given a salary increase seven times higher the COLA increase. Although he agrees that politicians are compensated more for their work, he reiterated that this was not the way to go about a salary increase to politicians.
On the other hand, the Opposition Leader said that he will continue energy and electricity subsidies and called for more investment on renewable energy sources. Clearly he is not giving much thought to the energy issue and the problem with electricity and fuel subsidies.
He also highlighted the reality of the backlog in Court cases especially the cases related to domestic violence and urged the government to address this issue.
This was the first budget reaction of the Opposition Leader.
