ADPD Leader Sandra Gauci is calling for a boycott of “Fish Fridays”, a new initiative in Budget 2026 in which school-children will be offered fresh fish every Friday. The Green Party leader dismissed it as a gimmick and described it as unrequested and starkly at odds with the long-standing, urgent needs raised by educators. Some of the needs which she listed include, air-conditioners in classroom, a nurse for every school and a functional internet connection given that some schools remain without a well functioning internet connection.
She added that it is useless if the government purchases laptops and then schools have a bad internet service. In addition, she also said there is a need for classrooms equipped specifically for autistic children such as multi-sensory rooms. Another issue she highlighted is about graduates with a Masters in Discipline being poorly paid.
The Green Party Leader also proposed to re-introduce payments for O Level exams, and to reimburse those who pass the exams, citing waste in the system. She also warned that the level of education has deteriorated rapidly and appealed to parents to support teachers’ requests to improve education.
