Opposition Leader Alex Borg seems to be having a hard time making a distinction between his previous job at a private company and his role as the Leader of Opposition. Indeed, Alex Borg was even criticised by his fellow PN members for publishing a supposed expenses list of leadership campaign, without listing his donors.
Obviously, that’s not how you publish an expenses list of a leadership campaign and his Party colleagues know this very well. He shouldn’t even have published it in the first place if he is not interested in divulging his donors details.
Alex Borg is obviously sustained by the same donors who sustain the Nationalist Party and he has also made no secret of his association with the the real-estate industryy. The only forgiving aspect about this is that at this stage, Alex Borgย did ascertain his authority over his the party’s lobbies and donors upon taking his new role by proposing constitutional amendments to protect Malta’s environment and ecosystems.
Alex Borg’s unexpected move about protecting the environment has changed the dynamic between him and the large construction lobbies in the country which are currently supporting Labour’s proposed planning reforms (these reforms are opposed by all of Malta’s environmental groups). Alex Borg’s latest gimmick with his expenses lists risks denting his newfound credibility and he should be avoiding further gimmicks to keep his message on the top of the political agenda.
