The train-wreck continues: Miriam Dalli

Last week, the Energy Minister Miriam Dalli held a press conference at the Labour Party headquarters condemning the Opposition for interrupting the Prime Minister’s speech in Parliament. If you think that I am hyperbolising this North Korean-styled metaphor, I invite you to watch the press conference yourself and tentatively listen to it until the end unless your patience runs runs out while waiting for the Minister to actually say something useful.

Script what she says in text and read it out aloud. It’s like the bickering of a child.

Miriam Dalli has consistently exhibited a level of maturity and competence comparable to that of an infant and owns the most horrible track-record as a Minister for Energy for a number of reasons. Malta suffered consistent blackouts in 2023 due to a power-grid failure that led to the death of dozens of old people due to excessive heat.

Miriam Dalli is also the executor of Malta’s energy and electricity tariffs which have so far cost the government up to โ‚ฌ1.2 billion and counting.

Now, Enemalta has said that it has lost up to โ‚ฌ60 million in carbon credits. Enemalta is saying that its trader, a Swiss based-fund, “missed three trades”. Obviously, the government is paying lawyers to recoup the money: more cash-burn.

The Minister has refused to disclose details about this case and this is something the Minister has done consistently: withholding important information from the public on most of the aspects of her ministry, Enemalta and her activities. There is nothing wrong with making the information about the Malta’s energy trades public as is the norm in Europe. The Minister’s stance against transparency and the publication of important information is mainly due to extensive incompetence and the cover-up of past corruption in relation to Electrogas. In other words, Miriam Dalli is hiding corruption and incompetence.

Despite the fact that energy deals and energy policy are strategic to the country, the government has prioritised covering-up corruption in the energy sector and hiding information and this situation poses extensive risks. The lack of accountability contributes to the consistent crises coming from the Energy Ministry.

The Energy Minister is a narcissist who believes that she can never be wrong, and mixed with her infantilism, her character makes her totally inept and unfit for purpose for such an important Ministerial role.
