The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher travelled to Tawila in Sudan to meet with survivors of Al-Fashir. Eyewitnesses and survivors have told the UN official of stories of massacres and mass rape when the Rapid Support Forces took over the city. Survivors also recounted stories of torture and extortion.
While in Tawila, Tom Fletcher also met with Tasis representatives to insist with them on safe passage for civilians. Tasis are the political arm of the RSF. Fletcher also said that up to half of the survivors in Tawila are children. Many Sudanese civilians travelled to Tawila by footy, 60KM away from Al-Fashir as the RSF captured the city. Eyewitnesses also say that hundreds died on the journey with thirst and exhaustion.
According to the United Nations, up to 100,000 civilians have fled from Al-Fashir but tens of thousands remain unaccounted for. The United Nations is pleading with the RSF to obtain access to the city to provide humanitarian aid but so far this access has been denied.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Armed Forces captured a Spartan-type military vehicle in Babnousa, West Kordofan. The vehicle is produced by STREIT Group which is a company based in the United Arab Emirates. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is calling on the UAE to end its arms shipments to the RSF. Some regular UAE military cargo flights to Africa were suspended following the State’s Secretary comments. The UAE is the main weapons supplier of the RSF.
Fighting is ongoing between the RSF and the SAF in the West and North Kordofan states.
