A parking space next to Dock 1, and the old entrance of the Dockyard, has been taken over by the American University of Malta. The parking space was originally allocated to the new university but the transfer was delayed due to protests by residents and the local council who opposed the transfer of surrounding properties to the AUM.
The area was used as a public parking space and was also used by boat hobbyists to repair and maintain their boats. The walled area of the parking space also includes storage spaces currently in use by boat owners.
The parking space was also used by people using the ferry service to Valletta.
The AUM is situated at the previous Dock 1 building.
