The European Parliament has yesterday approved the first legal package of the European Defence Industry Programme with 457 votes in favor, 148 against, and 33 abstentions.
The programme aims to develop the European Defence Industry Reinforcement through Common Procurement Act (EDIRPA) and the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) by integrating their works to improve efficiency in the delivery and supply of arms to European countries. The initiative adds to the momentum to the ReArm Europe and will also allocate โฌ1.5 billion for its development.
Theย programme provides for joint defence collaboration between EU member-states on defence initiatives including research and development with Ukraine also eligible to take part. A financial mechanism will also be created to address at rapid speed any supply-chain bottlenecks.
This is the latest EU initiative about defence following the announcing of the EU Military Schengen system.
