EU Defence Commissioner calls for more united defence strategy: stops short of calling for a European Army

EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius spoke at European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg yesterday and urged for a more cohesive and unified European defence policy. He quoted Mario Draghi about the importance of unified procurement in the EU and how this should also be applied to defence. He also urged Europe to increase its defence productivity and said that Europe is a giant on trade but is a sleeping giant on defence: this giant should be wakened he said.

The EU is stepping up common procurement in defence to increase efficiency.

However, the EU Defence Commissioner stopped short of calling for a European army – a proposal currently bein floated by several European member-states, particularly Spain. Recently, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas came out against the formation of a European Army saying that this would create a new chain of command.

In his speech Commissioner Kubilius also extolled NATO while urging for a more unified European policy.
