Rabat man killed after truck plunges into Mġarr quarry

A 50-year-old Rabat resident was tragically killed on Tuesday afternoon after the truck he was driving overturned and fell approximately two storeys into a construction site in Mġarr.

Police believe the fatal accident was caused by a mechanical failure in the vehicle. A police spokesman indicated that the truck likely suffered brake failure while traveling downhill in the Dwejra area. This mechanical issue caused the truck to veer off the road and plunge into the quarry below.

Emergency services, including a medical team and officers from the Civil Protection Department (CPD), were called to the scene around 2:00 PM, although the incident is believed to have occurred roughly 45 minutes earlier.

Despite the rapid response, the man was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

Magistrate Monica Borg Galea is leading a magisterial inquiry into the incident, and police investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the tragic event.

As someone who lived in the UK for nearly six decades, this is my observation: These events were rare. Here they are common. Every month or two. They are so avoidable. Draw your own conclusions. And I am really sorry for the victim and those who were close to him.
