Ċensu Bugeja was the international editor of the Paris Herald, later the International Herald Tribune. He was also one of the founders of the Labour Party in Malta and one of its major intellectuals. He also edited its newspapers including its satirical newspaper Ix-Xewka.
Gerald Strickland was the founder of the Progress Press which eventually published printed and published The Times of Malta. He was also one of the founder of the Constitutional Party.
These two Maltese giants laid the foundations of the modern Maltese press and their legacy is as strong as ever.
With The Maltese Herald, we seek to commemorate the enduring legacy of Ċensu Bugeja, whose progressive outlook and journalism left a profound mark both in Malta and abroad. Drawing on a rich historical tradition—one in which Voltaire was among the principal inspirations of the Paris Herald, and whose editors were forced into hiding during the Nazi occupation of France—we aim to extend an uncompromising European press tradition rooted in free speech, independence, and anti-fascism.
