According to the latest Eurostat statistics, Malta has the highest rate of money outflows to non-EU countries with up to 2.8% of its GDP flowing to non-EU countries in 2024. Malta was followed by Cyprus at 0.9% and Belgium with 0.6%. The countries receiving the highest surplus of money inflows from non-EU countries were Croatia with 2.6% of its GDP, Bulgaria with 1.3% of its GDP and Portugal with 1.2% of its GDP.
€52.1 billion sent outside the EU in 2024 and €14.8 was sent to EU households from non-EU countries in 2024. The figure for 2023 were €49.2 billion and €13.8 billion respectively.
Although these remittances are popularly attributed to third-country workers, these remittances also include large money transfers by households and individuals, but they do not include business and corporate payments. Malta and Cyprus are particularly high in the list.
