A meeting between Europe’s foreign ministers is ongoing in Brussels today discussing the reparations loan to Ukraine. The EU Commission is scrambling to reach a deal and address the legal concerns of member-states as it rushes to address Ukraine’s budget short-fall.
In her doorstep to the press, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said it is imperative to keep supporting Ukraine. provide it with security guarantees and increase the pressure on Russia. More oil tankers will be sanctioned and she also said that countries want to be in NATO because it offers them a guarantee against an attack against Russia, and Ukraine needs equivalent guarantees. Vice-Commission President Kaja Kallas concluded by stating if the fortress of Ukraine falls, the Donbas region, Russia would take other regions of Ukraine until proceed to attack Europe. “We should learn from history” High Representative Kallas said.
On a similar note, last week, German Chancellor Merz compared Vladimir Putin to Hitler and any concessions to him in Ukraine, as equivalent to the concessions made to Adolf Hitler with the Sudetenland in 1938. The Treaty of Munich signed in 1938 was meant to appease Hitler to the extent of preventing him from starting a war. UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain landed in the UK with a copy of the Treaty of Munich waving it to the crowd and the press declaring “We have peace”. Hitler invaded Poland a year later.
European leaders and Ukraine are currently discussing their counter-proposal to the US-Kremlin Pact on Ukraine.
