Franco Debono says political parties are not compliant with the Electoral Financing Law

Previous Nationalist MP Franco Debono said that the political parties are not compliant with the Financing of Political Parties Act (Chapter 544). Franco Debono was a proponent of this law himself when MP and eventually authored the law under Joseph Muscat’s administrations. He also says that the law is currently frozen as it is not being enforced.

The law obliges political parties to submit their account and disclose donors donating sums higher than โ‚ฌ7,000 but the Labour Party is committing fraud by breaking down big donations into multiple smaller donations, hiding the names of big donors in the official records as a result. The Nationalist Party is set to publish its accounts soon.

Yesterday, during their televised marathons, the Labour Party collected up to โ‚ฌ1.1 million in donations while the Nationalist Party collected up to โ‚ฌ730,000.
