A tragic incident unfolded in the Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of New Year’s Day, leaving multiple people dead and many others injured after a fire broke out at a crowded nightlife venue.
Preliminary figures are that around 40 persons died and over 100 were injured.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred shortly after midnight when a blaze rapidly spread through a popular bar called “Le Constellation”, where dozens of people were gathered to celebrate the New Year. Emergency services were dispatched within minutes, but the intensity of the fire and the high number of people inside the venue complicated rescue efforts.
Police confirmed that several victims died at the scene, while others were transported to hospitals in the canton of Valais and neighboring regions. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. Officials have not yet released an exact casualty figure, pending notification of families.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke filled the building and patrons attempted to escape through narrow exits. “There was shouting, smoke everywhere, and then people started running,” said one survivor interviewed by local media.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze after several hours. Investigators are now examining the site to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities said there is currently no indication of foul play, and early assessments suggest the incident may have been accidental.
Local officials expressed their condolences to the victims and their families, calling the event “a profound tragedy for the community.” Crisis support services have been made available to survivors and residents, and a period of mourning is expected to be announced.
Crans-Montana, known internationally as a luxury ski destination, was hosting thousands of visitors for the holiday season. The tragedy has cast a shadow over New Year celebrations across Switzerland, with messages of sympathy pouring in from across the country. European leaders such EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed their sympathy and shock at this tragedy.
