Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni says US military intervention in Venezuela was legitimate: EU calls for de-escalation and respect to international law

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has so far been the only outspoken European leader who said that the US military intervention in Venezuela was legitimate. In a public statement, the Italian Prime Minister said that she does not believe that this was the way to oust totalitarian dictators, but the US military intervention was legitimate on the grounds of security concerns that included drug trafficking and hybrid threats.

Russia and China had a strong foothold in Venezuela and wide access to Venezuela’s oil supplies. Russian military officers are also present in Venezuela and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Cuba of colonising Venezuela.

The EU called for calm and de-escalation. A government spokesperson gave the EU statement to the Times of Malta.

The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that his government will not recognise the US intervention.

The legitimate executive of the Venezuela has made supportive remarks of the US military intervention, which was also celebrated by Venezuelans worldwide.
