A year after a dramatic security breach at Malta International Airport, two of the four men who escaped from a flight on the airport’s tarmac remain at large, with authorities still unable to confirm their whereabouts.
On 30th December 2024, a plane en route to Istanbul was forced to make an emergency landing in Malta following a reported medical emergency onboard. During the unscheduled stop, four Moroccan passengers forced open the aircraft’s rear door and fled onto the runway, in what was described as an unprecedented breach of airport security.
Two of the men were swiftly apprehended and deported, but the remaining two managed to evade capture. Despite intensive searches in the days that followed, no further official updates were issued, and a year later their fate remains unknown.
According to other news sources, Maltese police confirmed that immediate searches were carried out after the escape and that international checks later showed the two fugitives were not wanted by foreign authorities for any crimes. However, authorities also confirmed that the men have still not been located and are formally being sought by Maltese law enforcement.
The prolonged lack of clarity has raised serious concerns about whether the men are still hiding in Malta or whether they may have left the island undetected, highlighting potential weaknesses in border controls and airport security procedures.
While officials insist that measures were taken following the incident, the fact that two escapees remain unaccounted for a full year later continues to fuel public unease and calls for greater transparency over how such a breach was allowed to happen.
