The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) came at 2.4% for last December according to the latest NSO statistics. This is the first downward reading after two consecutive months that were in line with the upward pace of last year. November’s reading was 2.5%.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages kept leading the price increases (0.68%) with meat in particular putting the pressure in the latest readings. Restaurants and hotels with 0.48% and transport with 0.33%. Inflationary pressures in Malta have been persistent with food and anon-alcoholic beverages and remains above the current Euro average of 2-2.1%.
Malta’s inflation rate is also being kept low with energy and fuel subsidies costing the government up to โฌ200 million a year.
