Civil society and Chamber of Commerce insist that illegal businesses should not be compensated over Storm Harry damages

The Chamber of Commerce has condemned the Prime Minister’s proposal to compensate illegal businesses over damages they suffered during Storm Harry. Some illegal business, notably in Għar Lapsi and other coastal areas struck by Storm Harry are seeking compensation over damages caused by the storm. Many other illegal structures such as boathouses were also destroyed during the storm.

The Chamber of Commerce stated that such compensation would not be fair and equitable to businesses who follow the law.

The Prime Minister is seeking to regularise the illegal possessions of many of these owners instead of enforcing the law especially with huis proposed planning reforms. The Prime Minister now also wants to compensate owners who have businesses mired in planning illegalities.

Political Party Momentum has also condemned the compensation proposal to business owners who have illegally appropriated public spaces with tables and chairs. The President of the Ramblers Association stated that the public will now be paying those who have expropriated public property, and that this measure only shows that this is a government of thieves.
