Yesterday, the Speaker of Parliament shot down a Government-proposed motion to bring a vote in Parliament over the nomination of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera for Chief Justice. The motion was proposed by Labour MP Naomi Cachia. The Speaker Anġlu Farrugia said that the motion had to be presented at least three days in advance and there is no support for the motion given that it acquires the support of two-thirds of Parliament.

MaltaToday, which previously promoted the Prime Minister’s nomination is now promoting the potential nomination of Judge Edwina Grima.
Newsbook is reporting that the Opposition is proposing four names and these are Judges Anthony Ellul, Edwina Grima, Francesco Depasquale and Wenzu Mintoff.
The nomination for Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera has now been rejected and the Government and Opposition have to engage in private talks to come with as compromise candidate.
