Nothing new was said or announced yesterday during the respective speeches of the major political leaders. The Prime Minister referred to the IMF’s Country Report on Malta which quotes the per capita growth increases. Malta is in league with Romania and Lithuania in this scale of the statistic because real economic growth in small or poor economies is more impactful
The Prime Minister then reminded about Labour’s authoritarian and illiberal credentials by saying that he “was not going to allow the Opposition to start Magisterial inquiries”.ย Magisterial Inquiries were the only untainted state procedure by which politicians could be investigated and the Labour government reformed the law to prevent any further Magisterial Inquiries. He also said that he was not going compromise with the Opposition over their preferred candidate for Chief Justice, alluding once again to Judge Edwina Grima. The Opposition denied that it made this proposal.
On the other hand, Opposition and Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg didn’t make any new announcements either. He insisted on a “labour study” which will investigate the inefficiencies of the labour market. I don’t think this is something you can oppose but it’s rather uninspiring that the Opposition Leader’s main theme of a Sunday speech is a study which will be commissioned in the future by a different government. He also said that he can no longer trust the Prime Minister after having lied to him and in public about the ongoing discussions on the new Chief Justice.
So far it is just more of the same by both parties: a dry and weak Opposition and a chaotic government that is desperately trying to cut its losses with more authoritarianism.
