The President of the Republic, Myriam Spiteri Debono, delivered her annual address to Malta’s diplomatic corps at the Presidential Palace in Valletta earlier this week, reaffirming the importance of diplomatic engagement and international cooperation for the island nation.
In her address, Spiteri Debono described Malta’s ambassadors as “Malta’s voice and face abroad,” underscoring their role in strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Maltese communities overseas. She expressed appreciation for their work in promoting dialogue and fostering cooperation between Malta and partner states.
She reminded about the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and observed that, while ceasefire efforts continue, the impact of hostilities — particularly on vulnerable populations — remains significant. She also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and said that reconstruction efforts will take years. She also referred to Libya and urged for a united and inclusive government that assures stability in the country.
The President commended the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg noting or advocating Malta’s foreign policy abroad.
