Feritility rate inthe EU going down: Malta retains lowest fertility rate

According to the latest Eurostat statistics, the fertility rate in Europe has gone down in 2024 hitting an average of 1.34 live births per woman. In 2024, 3.55 million babies were born in the EU, a 3.3% decrease from the 3.67 million in 2023. The average fertility rate in Europe declined from 1.38 in 2023 to 1.34 in 2024.

The countries with the highest fertility rate are Bulgaria (1.72 live births per woman), followed by France with 1.61 and Slovenia with 1.52. On the other hand, Malta has retained the lowest fertility rate in the EU at 1.01, followed by Spain with 1.1 and Lithuania with 1.11.

Malta’s fertility rate has continued going down from 1.03 in 2023 to 1.01 in 2024.
