Melita booked their place in the quarter-finals of the BOV Challenge Cup after overcoming Mฤกarr United 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in an exciting encounter.
Mฤกarr United made a bright start and took the lead after 11 minutes when Cristhyan Noto Souza found the back of the net to give his side the early advantage.
Melita responded well and managed to restore parity on 32 minutes through Jesรบs Andrรฉs Yepez Morlets, who finished well to send the teams into the break level.
After the restart, Melita looked the more dangerous side and turned the match around on 77 minutes when Kevin Stev Moreno Obregรณn struck to put them 2-1 ahead.
However, Mฤกarr United refused to give up and deep into stoppage time, Cristhyan Noto Souza struck again in the 92nd minute, completing his brace and forcing the match into a penalty shoot-out.
From the spot, Melita kept their composure and emerged 5-3 winners, sealing their qualification to the quarter-finals of the BOV Challenge Cup after a dramatic contest.
Pietร Hotspurs booked their place in the next round of the BOV Challenge Cup after securing a narrow 1โ0 victory over Swieqi United at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Wednesday evening.
