Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament has called for the greater participation of women in politics during a Women’s Day event in Mdina. Metsola stressed and highlighted the use of strong female leadership not just locally, but internationally.

The EP President was gathered during the event to listen to concerns and questions from women in business, finance, civil society, philantropy, education, media and content creation backgrounds – focusing on key areas were women can be represented via leadership and puiblic visibility.

The discussion was especially highlighted by three known local presenters, Clare Agius Ordway, Melanie Kelly and Trudy Kerr with base questions relating to women in politics, leadership and motherhood balances and public scrutiny faced by female public figures.

Metsola highlighted how in recent years, female appointments to board roles in the European Parliament have increased from 35% to 43% respectively and has acknowledged that whilst this progress is quite good – it is not enough and that work is still needed.

Taken in then the wider EU context, the European Parliament has organised an interparliamentary meeting in Brussels by the Committee on Women’s Rights (FEMM) whilst the European Commission has now launched a new EU Gender Strategy this week. One can note that this strategy was previously voted on and adopted in November of 2025.

Metsola concluded that achieving true equality requires the continued policy efforts of social change and visible female leadership to further truly inspire the next generation of women leaders.
