Floriana dropped two valuable points after being held to a 2–2 draw by Birkirkara in a YoHealth Malta Premier Closing Round Top 6 league phase match played at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.
The result could have important implications in the standings, as the Greens now risk starting the Top 6 phase level on points with Ħamrun Spartans, should the latter secure victory against Mosta on Sunday.
For Birkirkara, the draw was not enough to change their fate in the standings. The Stripes will still take part in the Bottom 6 phase, alongside Sliema Wanderers, Hibernians, Żabbar St. Patrick, Tarxien Rainbows and Mosta.
Floriana made a perfect start to the match and went ahead after just four minutes when Kenan Dervišagić found the net to give the Greens an early lead.
However, the advantage lasted only a short time. Four minutes later, Kemar Reid responded for Birkirkara, levelling the score and restoring parity in the early stages of the game.
Floriana regained control midway through the first half and were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes. Jake Grech stepped up and converted from the spot, putting the Greens 2–1 ahead as they looked set to take all three points.
As the match moved into stoppage time, Floriana appeared to be heading towards victory. However, four minutes into added time, Jan Busuttil struck a dramatic late equaliser for Birkirkara, denying the Greens the win and ensuring the match ended 2–2.
The late goal proved costly for Floriana, who now face increased pressure in the race at the top of the table as the competition moves into the decisive phase of the season.
