British citizen who spied for China was Maltese government consultant

The British press broke the story earlier today about David Taylor, who has been charged in court in the United Kingdom on accusations of spying for China. New details about the case have since emerged, including that Taylor worked for the Maltese government during the Labour administration in 2017.

Initial local press reports state that David Taylor supported the electoral campaign of a Maltese Labour Party politician. The nature of his consultancy work with the government at the time is still unclear, and questions remain about which ministry or government entity engaged his services.

David Taylor was a member of the pro-China think-tank Asia House.  His wife, Joani Reid, was a Labour MP and resigned from Parliament on the wake of the allegations.  She was also arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

Malta is under significant Chinese influence due to the links by the Labour Party and the shadow-Labour economy with China.

Joseph Muscat made use of various individuals for media and consultancy services throughout his tenure which came from the Labour Party (UK).
