The rape of a child costs just €7,000 according to Nadur parish priest Michael Said.
Today, Times of Malta published a story about an outrageous Court judgement that confirmed that a parish priest from Nadur brokered a deal between the family of a girl that was raped and the brothers of a politician to stay silent about her rape. The girl was 14 years-old when she was raped by Josef Said and Peter Paul Said who are the brothers of Chris Said – a PN Gozitan MP and also previous Minister for Justice.
Nadur Parish priest Michael Said interjected on behalf of the brothers to negotiate a compensation sum with the family of the victim in exchange for her silence. The girl was initially paid up to €7,000 by the parish priest with supposedly the payments later reaching up to €120,000.
The Church has not commented on the case.
Medieval justice has been applied with Maltese law being vetoed by Gozitan custom and omerta. This should not have been the case and those responsible for the rape of a woman should have been held accountable by the Maltese Justice system. The brothers were eventually acquitted in Court.
In the meantime we are also trying to confirm whether Michael Said is also related to Chris Said (which is most probably since they are all from Nadur). I find it hard to believe that Chris Said didn’t have any weight in enabling such a deal with the victim’s family. The case took place in 2008 when the Nationalist Party was in government. You can’t blame the Labour government for failing justice in this matter.
Gozo Rules.
